Scents and Sounds of East Africa and Beyond

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the spice and mystery of Zanzibar and engage in a lively musical and cultural experience that includes storytelling, Swahili poetry, music making and performing. Music will draw on the traditional heritage of rhythm and melody from the Swahili coast and there will be an exhibition of ‘Kanga-Leso’ – a cloth that means more than gold to Zanzibar women.

Mim Suleiman is a singer songwriter who revels in her East African musical heritage, driven by powerful soulful vocals, sung mostly in Swahili and delivered with a big heart and exuberant dance. She facilitates memorable and engaging workshops and Swahili rooted cultural shows and regularly performs at Womad. She is currently researching the cultural gems of East Africa as part of a major project. On Saturday evening she will give a concert open to the public
